Shock of the Old and New is a series of mixed media drawings. It implies the notion of drawing as a response to what is seen through the interaction between drawings and imagery. The act of drawing relies on our memory of observation and imagination. As we make sense of our observation, we translate our observation into a manageable form. Some of our memory of observation is changed and lost. Hence, drawing is no longer limiting to its original form. It involves memory and creativity. Shock of the Old and New consists of two collages combined with drawings. The two collages present the differences between old and new. We appreciate the new because it is modern, on the other hand, we preserve the old because it is a tradition that cannot be reproduced. Through our memory and observation, we transform our visual experience into lines. Gradually, the development of lines form into a believable object, it depicts a virtual perspective of space and time that photography can never portray.

The Physical and the Visible is a collection of mirrors covered with paint. Throughout my practices, I have been drawn to the idea of abstraction and concentrated on the relationship between space and shape. By removing the representation of the real world completely, the abstract forms leave the viewers to explore the world through their imagination. The hard-edged geometric forms appear to be random but the balanced composition encourages viewers to gaze away from themselves and into the surroundings.

Exploration looks into Michael Wolff’s Three Muscles of Creativity theory — humans have three muscles. The first muscle is curiosity, a muscle that enables us to ask questions. The second muscle is appreciation, which is not questioning but noticing things can be joyful and colourful. The muscle of curiosity and the muscle of appreciation enable the third muscle, imagination. The knowledge of knowing and assembling different things together to create a new vision. Our eyes are the first stage of exploration, which make us wonder and discover new things.
